Debra C: Day 6 - Chateau Chantel

Shapely Simplification - Chalk Pastel  16"x24"
In design visual balance and the weight within the composition creates organization and unification. Here, in the vastness of Chateau Chantal I feel a sense of accomplishment. Problem solving on what shapes should be what values and how they play off their neighbors was a continuous thought process. Brainstorming ahead of time by laying down the values of various chalks, how they interplay with other values became a valuable resource as I proceeded to lay down layer upon layer of chalk.      The decision to enhance the inner bright yellow hill with a highlight enriched this inner shape that leads to the foreground "q-tip tree." Adding they left side cypress balanced the two fore-front bushes and created some stability to an otherwise right-weighted painting.
Less Complication - More Simplification - Abstracted Landscape in Plein Aire... is this just the beginning of a new way to approach painting?  Do I have my interest piqued? You Bet!  I am on fire, and am ready to get on to the next landscape!
